Brandon Vickerd (Hamilton)

Brandon Vickerd is an artist and Professor of Sculpture and Chair of the Department of Visual Arts and Art History at York University. His whose work straddles the line between high and low culture, acting as a catalyst for critical thought and addressing the failed promise of a modernist future predicated on boundless scientific advancement. His public installation work is designed not to come across as obvious sculpture, but rather as an anomaly inserted into the daily experience of the spectator.

Brandon Vickerd is the recipient of multiple awards and grants from the Social Science and Humanities Research Council, the Canada Council for the Arts, and the Ontario Arts Council, and has shown his work at exhibitions including Sputnik Returned 2 at the OpenART Biennale (Orebro, Sweden) and aceartinc. This will be Brandon Vickerd’s second participation in Passages Insolites, after Alouette in 2018.

Alouette

The Alouette satellite has once again crashed in Quebec City! This replica of the Canadian satellite presented at the 2018 edition of Passages Insolites recalls modernity’s failed promise of a brighter future. It could equally well represent our ever-growing obsession with connectivity and the resulting accumulation of space garbage. Will the day come when the sky finally does fall down on our heads?
