ABYSSESJune 20 2024 to MARCH 30 2025

Alissa Bilodeau plunges us into the abyssal depths of a cavern seemingly dug into the Côte de la Montagne, a hillside in Old Quebec. The exhibition space is transformed into a phantasmagorical ecosystem of biomorphic creatures, flourishing plant life and mineral outgrowths. Working in her usual medium, the textile artist creates an immersive, sensory-rich world. Through an environment alive with shape, texture, materials, light and sound, she transports spectators to a sublime, marvellous elsewhere.

ABYSSES lures us in like a carnivorous plant, enchanting us with its fantastical appearance only to draw us into a sinister trap. While it is joyfully kitschy, bright and resplendent with sequins, furs and rhinestones, the work can also be read as a comment on the invasion of the earth by man-made materials which are altering our natural environments forever. Alissa Bilodeau’s work enacts the collision of the organic and the synthetic in a paradoxically fertile dynamic of attraction and repulsion.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Inspired by the ecological concept of habitat, Alissa Bilodeau creates textile-based sculptural installations with metamorphic forms and surfaces evocative of invasive organisms. Her work suggests plant life re-encroaching on the human world and asks us to reimagine our relationship with natural ecosystems.

Alissa Bilodeau holds a BFA from Université Laval and a diploma in sculpture from the Maison des métiers d’art de Québec. She has exhibited widely, including a dozen solo exhibitions and world-class events such as the Paris Biennale internationale des métiers d’art et création.
