ALISSA BILODEAU
FREE
Inspired by the concept of ecological habitat, Alissa Bilodeau knits biological outgrowths that seem to proliferate like ground cover with features of carnivorous plants, anemones, and mushrooms. HEATH appears to sprout from a dreamlike garden and invade the exhibition space. The tree-like structure layered with animal, plant, and aquatic textures and shapes shimmers in gleefully artificial colours. With this singular arch, the artist has created a portal that opens a breach into the imaginary.
HEATH is the starting point for an evolving co-creation. Visitors are invited to knit, crochet or make pompons in a cosy, warm alcove with wool and tools at their disposal. For the duration of the show, the public’s textile contributions will be collected, pieced together and arranged in such a way as to gradually cover the architecural elements in the exhibition space. Inspired by Alissa Bilodeau’s plush installations, these collective proliferations will create an open, friendly and gentle knitting circle.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Inspired by the ecological concept of habitat, Alissa Bilodeau creates textile-based sculptural installations with metamorphic forms and surfaces evocative of invasive organisms. Her work suggests plant life re-encroaching on the human world and asks us to reimagine our relationship with natural ecosystems.
Alissa Bilodeau holds a BFA from Université Laval and a diploma in sculpture from the Maison des métiers d’art de Québec. She has exhibited widely, including a dozen solo exhibitions and world-class events such as the Paris Biennale internationale des métiers d’art et création.
HEATH was initially produced for the 2023 edition of Jardin d’hiver by MANIF D’ART, curated by Julien St-Georges Tremblay.
