MAKE WAY FOR
SARAH THIBAULT

With its imposing volume and gilded finish, this architectural element is entirely covered with a high relief of baguettes cast in papier-mâché, one of the artist’s favourite materials. The work brings together symbols of the domestic, both in the reference to daily bread and in the dimensions of the arch, which exactly match the height of the ceilings and doors in the artist’s apartment. Aligned perfectly with the pathway, Monumental Impermanence slips seamlessly into the landscape of the park and forms a passageway to the river.
“The loaves are installed to imitate the stones or bricks of a building. It’s a way for me to present domestic work as foundational, as much in the construction of a society as on a more personal level, in the construction of intimacy.” – Sarah Thibault
