BIG OTHER

Big Other, the compelling series by Pierre&Marie, continues its journey across Asia, finding a new resonance on the island of Xiju for the Matsu Biennial.

With a blend of humor and critical insight, the work transforms local architecture by grafting oversized, cartoonish eyes onto buildings, imbuing them with a presence that is both playful and disquieting. These monumental gazes stir the uncanny sensation of being watched—at once benign and oppressive. They recall Orwell’s Big Brother while exposing our quiet complicity with digital platforms: seductive interfaces that harvest, predict, and monetize our behavior in the era of surveillance capitalism.

The Matsu Biennial reimagines the Taiwanese islands through contemporary art. Just 9 km from mainland China, this territory still bears the scars of its military and strategic past. In this insular context, Big Other resonates deeply—animating the remnants of the Cold War to question the surveillance of yesterday and illuminate the realities of today.

Their work is held in numerous public, private, and institutional collections, and they have received several awards and distinctions in recognition of their artistic contribution in Quebec.
