THE UNDERSIDES OF RUINS

With The undersides of ruines, Ève Cadieux constructs a fictional archaeology of Place Royale by focusing on the overlooked aspects of its recent history. Within the historic vaults of Aire publique, she unfolds a series of light boxes and illuminated plinths where altered archival images are layered with material remnants of the past.

Drawing on traces of neighborhood life between 1930 et 1970, the artist reconstructs a collective narrative marked by the major transformations of Place-Royale, notably the demolitions and reconstructions of the 1970s. This contemporary art installation questions the memory of place, the erased narratives and invisible traces left by the communities that inhabited the neighborhood.
