The exhibition
ABYSSES
Alissa Bilodeau plunges us into the abyssal depths of a cavern seemingly carved out of the Mountain Coast. The exhibition space has been transformed into a phantasmagorical ecosystem where biomorphic creatures, plant surges and mineral proliferations rub shoulders. The textile artist proposes an immersive scenography that appeals to the senses. The environment, teeming with volumes, textures, materials, light and sound, transports us to a sublime and marvellous elsewhere
ABYSSES lures us in like a carnivorous plant: it draws us in with its splintered appearance, the better to absorb us in its dark trap. On the one hand, the installation is light and vibrant, even kitsch, with its sequins, furs and fake diamonds. On the other, it bears witness to an invasion of man-made materials that is forever altering the natural environment. In Alissa Bilodeau's work, the organic and the synthetic collide in a paradoxical attraction-repulsion dynamic.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
ALISSA BILODEAU
Guided by the concept of habitat in ecology, Alissa Bilodeau creates sculptural installations with metamorphic forms and textile surfaces evocative of invasive organisms. Her projects suggest vegetation in a state of retaliation that overwhelms us and invites us to re-examine our relationship with natural ecosystems.
Alissa Bilodeau holds a bachelor's degree in visual and media arts from Université Laval and a Technique en sculpture from the Maison des métiers d'art de Québec. She has presented a dozen solo exhibitions in Quebec and participated in major events such as the Biennale internationale des métiers d'art et création in Paris.
