FACES
With Faces, Marc-Antoine K. Phaneuf presents a labyrinthine installation of nearly 2,000 images of objects with faces. This immersive contemporary art exhibition transforms the Aire publique space into an astonishing gallery where kitsch figurines, retro toys, masks and DIY objects seem to observe visitors.
The photographs were collected by the artist from online resale platforms and social networks. Their accumulation recalls the incessant flow of images that characterizes our experience of the web and digital culture. By bringing together these used and anonymous objects, Marc-Antoine K. Phaneuf reveals an unexpected poetry where the strange, the humorous and the familiar coexist.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
MARC-ANTOINE K. PHANEUF (QUEBEC)
Marc-Antoine K. Phaneuf’s practice is rooted in the collection of objects and words drawn from popular culture and everyday practices. Through rearrangement and juxtaposition, he uncovers their narrative potential, composing a poetry of the ordinary that reflects—with humor—the myths and idiosyncrasies of the collective imagination.
The artist gratefully acknowledges the support of the City of Québec and the VU Centre for their assistance in the production of this exhibition.
