MYTH AND EVIDENCE
A glimmer of light emanating from inside an opalescent-finish display case reveals the silhouette of a legendary animal: the unicorn. The translucent surface blurs the reading of its realistic-looking forms. At once exposed and concealed, elusive and imprisoned, the evanescent presence of this mythical creature exudes a certain magnetism. There's no doubt that this symbol of purity and grace, which has captured the Western imagination for centuries, still exerts its powers of fascination.
Presented in Chicoutimi in collaboration with Centre Bang as part of artist Mathieu Valade's exhibition Sensationnel! from June 19 to September 3, 2025.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
MATHIEU VALADE
Mathieu Valade explores the contradictory relationships that exist between simple forms and the images they can evoke when diverted. The production of sculptural objects or drawings is hybridized with other iconographic elements to raise new potential for interpretation.
Mathieu Valade's work has been presented at the MAC VAL in France, the Musée national des beaux-arts de Québec and in many artist-run centers, galleries and major events in Canada and around the world. The artist is represented by Galerie 3 in Quebec City. This work was produced as part of Manif d'art 8 - La biennale de Québec in 2017.
